Malaysia and the United Nations is a multilateral relation between Malaysia and the United Nations. Prior to Malaysia, the Federation of Malaya expressed its interest to join the UN and did so on 17 September 1957. Later, Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo Sabah and Sarawak was merged together as Malaysia on 16 September 1963. Two years later, Singapore was expelled from the Federation and joined the UN in its own capacity on 21 September 1965.
Malaysia plays an active role within the organization with participation concentrated mostly in peace-keeping conducted by the organization for example:
- The UN Operation in the Congo
- The Protection Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina
- The Transition Assistance Group in Namibia
- The operation in Somalia
- The mission in East Timor
- Interim Force in Lebanon
Malaysia served a two-year term in the Security Council after being elected in 2014 election. It was the fourth time that Malaysia has been elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. The first was in 1965, the second in 1989 and the third in 1999.
Malaysia also contributed $ 7.9 million to the United Nations in its yearly budget in 2014.
