Through the Looking Glass: Women's Human Rights, the Federal Constitution and CEDAW

Through the Looking Glass

I cannot remember the significance of the title above and how it relates to the convention on women. I think it has something to do with inequality in the UK around 1800-1900 where women had no right to vote and bringing back to problems that modern women face. Then, women activists take back the narrative with the movie, Alice through the Looking Glass. Hollywood has a long way to go to become equal. Women still do not receive equal pay in virtually all industries. Blockbuster movies offer endless opportunities for men, but very few for actresses. So, this movie has been seen as an anomaly since it has a female lead.

Participants enjoyed the video presentation from Youtube archive on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The videos explained about the principles of CEDAW. They are:

  • Non-discrimination
  • Substantive equality
  • State obligation
